On the surface, watching porn sounds like a great way to spend jury duty (okay, on a very shallow surface). But this week in downtown Los Angeles, a jury will be watching videos in a Federal courthouse to determine if they are criminally obscene.
Filmmaker Ira Isaacs, who is on trial, claims his films are art, and that the content, which includes scenes of bestiality, and in one, “an actress cries throughout.
…if jurors find that any of the four videos at issue in the case have any “literary, scientific or artistic value,” the work is not legally obscene, according to a 1973 Supreme Court ruling. [LA Times]
But, if they don’t, Isaacs could face prison time and hefty fines. Hopefully the estimated $24,000 he makes per month selling the videos will cover the penalties.
